Flu cases up, but remain behind pre-pandemic years

SAFFORD — As the flu season starts to come to an end, the number of cases in Graham County is up significantly from last year, but remains well behind historical trends.

Arizona Department of Health Services reports 102 cases in Graham County as of March 31, 10 times as many as 2020-21.

However, that total is well below flu seasons before the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2017-18, Graham County experienced more than 900 cases, while in 2016-17, there were 407 cases of flu in Graham County.

Influenza A accounts for 91 of the cases, while eight are Influenza B and three are unknown at this time.

Greenlee County has seen 82 cases of flu so far this season, one case of Influenza B and 82 cases of Influenza A.

Statewide, there have been 7,726 cases of flu so far this season, a 546 percent increase over last season’s total of 1,196.
