PIMA — “I’m so glad you’re open again,” This is true Mexican food,” and “This is the American dream” were the comments from customers as they greeted Jesus “Chuy” Cabrera at El Mesquite Taqueria’s re-opening Tuesday.

“We’ve been working on this for five years,” Cabrera said. “It feels wonderful and I hope to be successful while we’re out here and people keep supporting us.”

Cabrera’s El Mesquite is family owned and operated, and offers authentic Sonoran style Mexican food — burros, tortas, tacos, tostadas and more, as well as numerous side dishes and drinks, including the popular horchata — and his new location perfectly captures the feel of a vintage Mexican cantina.

Cabrera originally started his restaurant in 2008 as a food truck, before moving to 28 W. Center St. in Pima. But demand was so great, he had to find a larger location. Cabrera moved his restaurant into this new, larger space — nearly 2,000 square feet — at 257 W. Center St. in Pima, which opened as of Tuesday.
