THATCHER, Ariz. — Six students from Eastern Arizona College’s Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) chapter joined more than 2,000 of America’s best and brightest university and college students in San Antonio at the PBL National Leadership Conference held June 24 – 27.

EAC’s Chalindria Fulkerson and Brandyn Quinonez received national recognition at the PBL Awards of Excellence Program on June 27. Fulkerson and Quinonez competed in the hospitality management category and brought home fifth place. Candidates in this category were required to complete an objective assessment and interactive presentation that tested their knowledge in industry trends, customer expectations, environmental and global issues, financial management and budgeting, human resources, legal issues, marketing concepts, and operations and management functions.

“Through dedicated hours of study and practice our students successfully competed against the best business students from across the United States,” stated Todd Haynie, EAC president. “I am so proud their accomplishments and our instructors who prepare them to succeed at the highest levels.”

The award was part of a comprehensive national competitive events program that recognizes and rewards excellence in a broad range of business and career-related areas. For many students, the competitive events are the capstone activity of their academic careers. In addition to competitions, students immersed themselves in interactive workshops, visited an information-packed exhibit hall, and learned from motivational keynotes.

To compete at the national level, EAC’s students were required to place at the PBL State Leadership Conference held at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University on April 12 and 13. At the state level, EAC’s Angelica Yslas placed first in business communication, Braxton Barney placed second in personal finance, Hayden Finch place third in financial concepts, Sabrina Molina and Angelica Yslas placed second in desktop publishing, and Fulkerson and Quinonez placed second in hospitality management.
