PHOENIX – Following protests in Maricopa County against police brutality, Gov. Doug Ducey declared a state of emergency Sunday and put a statewide curfew in place.
The curfew takes place from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. each day, starting Sunday and running for at least a week.
“Now, more needs to be done done, in more places around the state, to protect law and order, and public safety,” Ducey said in a prepared statement. “The looting and violence we saw last night, especially in Scottsdale, simply cannot be tolerated. And it won’t be. Destruction of property does not qualify as freedom of expression.”
Ducey said he would be communicating with mayors from around the state to ensure that plans against further protests are in place and being enacted.
