SAFFORD — A convenient imposition of ashes for Ash Wednesday will take place this week.
On Wednesday, the Gila Valley Ministerial Association will set up two locations for drivers on their way to work or school to receive ashes.
The drive-up imposition of ashes will take place from 7-10 a.m. at the corner of 20th Avenue and 8th Street in Safford, across from Walmart; and at First United Methodist Church on 10th Avenue in Safford.
All faiths and ages are welcome to participate.
In Christianity, Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and starts six weeks of penance, culminating in the celebration of Easter. In addition to prayer and the imposition of ashes upon the forehead, some sects also mark Ash Wednesday by not eating meat.
