THATCHER — More construction activity in Thatcher is about to take place.

On Friday, representatives from American Southwest Credit Union, the Town of Thatcher, Graham County and the Graham County Chamber of Commerce gathered for a ceremonial ground-breaking for the new American Southwest Credit Union Gila Valley Branch in the Thatcher Commercial Plaza.

Mayra Parra, the Gila Valley Branch president for American Southwest Credit Union, said the financial institution will be equipped to help all of Graham and Greenlee counties.

“The Gila Valley is a little bit of everything; you have a little bit of everything,” Parra said. “You have all these big agencies, companies, small businesses; we’re big and there’s a lot of variety here. I love it.”

Thatcher Mayor Jenny Howard said American Southwest Credit Union, and a new Culver’s restaurant planned for the Thatcher Commercial Plaza, are just two examples of what the town is doing to attract development — both commercial and residential.

“Work alongside, help them succeed, don’t make it hard,” Howard said. “Work through the challenges together to make it happen.”

Construction on the new $3.8-$4.2 million branch will begin immediately, with the goal to be open for business by the first week of December.
