December COVID-19 infections, deaths outpacing last year

SAFFORD —The number of new coronavirus cases in Graham County is 75 percent ahead of last year at the same time.

With Graham County Health Department reporting 221 new cases Dec. 1, 48 Dec. 3, 77 Dec. 7, and 44 Dec. 9, there have been 390 new cases this month. Through Dec. 9, 2020, there were 223 new cases.

December 2020 finished as the month with the second greatest number of cases in Graham County, with 1,013. Only January 2021, with 1,889, had more.

There have also been 15 coronavirus-related deaths in the Gila Valley so far this month — seven reported Dec. 1, two Dec. 3, four Dec. 7, and two Dec. 9. That’s 400 percent ahead of the three deaths recorded though the first nine days of December 2020.

December 2020 ended as the deadliest month in Graham County when it comes to COVID-19, with 16 deaths.

Graham County Health Department offers the COVID-19 vaccine free to anyone 5 years of age and older. In addition, COVID-19 booster vaccinations are available free to anyone 18 years old and older.
