Death Onsite at Freeport-McMoRan Safford

A fatal electrical accident took the life of Bran A. Ortiz on April 10, 2016 on the job site. Located at Freeport-McMoRan Safford, Ortiz usually held the job title as a Hydromat EW Operator. At the age of twenty-five at the time of his death, Ortiz had worked Freeport-McMoRan Safford for nearly five years. On the day of the accident, he was charged with the job of priming a diaphragm pump which was located outside a stripping machine.

Ortiz was found motionless, his face pressed against the stainless steel flange of the return HDPE pipe. His knee was contacting moist pavement. When he was found, CPR was immediately administered. Ortiz was later removed from life support on April 10th, 2016. Although the preliminary report of the accident indicates that the cause of Ortiz’s death was electrocution, the report states that it does not represent the concrete conclusion regarding the reasons for his death.
