Cousin saying no to romance leads to criminal damage

SAFFORD — A man who reportedly damaged an apartment window because his cousin rebuffed his amorous advances was turned away at the jail for being too drunk.

Safford Police responded to an apartment complex July 24 because the suspect, identified as Verle Henry, allegedly broke out the front window. The victim said Henry was “making advances” on her and she told her cousin to leave.

Officers found Henry in the area of 5th Street and 9th Avenue. Henry reportedly denied intentionally damaging the window, saying instead that he was pushed into it.

Officers placed Henry under arrest for criminal damage; however, after transport to Graham County Jail Henry was refused intake because he reportedly showed a 0.35 blood-alcohol content on a breathalyzer.

Henry was then cited and released by the Safford officers.
