SAFFORD — The Graham County Board of Supervisors gave two arms of law enforcement the green light to seek additional funds for keeping the community safe.

During Monday’s meeting, the board unanimously authorized the Graham County Sheriff’s Office to apply for three grants:

  • $26,000 from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to pay for overtime for DUI patrols
  • $20,000 from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to pay for STEP overtime
  • $26,000 from the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission Drug, Gang and Violent Crime Control Program

The board also authorized Graham County Attorney L. Scott Bennett to apply for the Arizona Automobile Theft Authority Vehicle Theft Task Force grant.

“Traditionally, in Graham County, that hasn’t been a huge problem. But, as I’m sure you’re well aware, we had a duo come in from out of town,” Bennett said. “If nothing else, maybe they’ve given us the numbers we need to qualify for this grant. So while they’re both sitting safely in our jail, maybe we’ll find the silver lining to get us some funds.”

Amount of the vehicle theft grant was not disclosed.
