SAFFORD — The programming room at the Safford City-Graham County Library was packed Friday with new and expectant parents, as the Community Baby Shower returned to in-person attendance.

“The response, not only from vendors and folks donating prizes, has been overwhelming. And as we’re finding out today, the public is really excited to be back in-person and they’re coming out in droves,” said Elizabeth Henley, Early Literacy coordinator for the library.

The Community Baby Shower is a collaborative effort between the library and First Things First to help parents deal with the first few years of their new baby’s life.

“Connecting with resources in the community that will help them be better parents,” said Antoinette Griffin with First Things First.

There were giveaways of items new parents need, such as diapers and formula; and vendors included health-care providers and the Graham County Health Department, the Safford Lions Club offering free eye screenings, and nursing students from Eastern Arizona College who helped teach new parents about proper diaper changing and swaddling.
