SAFFORD — Construction is experiencing a renaissance in the Gila Valley.

Safford appears to be the destination for multifamily housing and commercial.

Safford Planning and Community Development Director Susan Anderson recently updated the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission that a two-story, 40-unit apartment complex is planned for 1st Avenue (U.S. Highway 191), and three fourplexes have been proposed for Golf Course Road.

The Safford Planning and Zoning Commission voted in support of a request for rezoning a parcel of land on south 1st Avenue from A-R (agricultural residential) to C-1 (highway commercial) for development of a Dollar General store. The issue moves to the City Council for final action.

The other big construction projects in Safford are both in the public sector, with the new Safford Police Station close to completion, and requests for bids have been issued for construction of the new Dorothy Stinson School.

In Thatcher, three building permits for new single-family homes were issued in January and two were issued in February, with a combined valuation of $1.2 million.

In addition, the town issued permits for one addition to a home, four residential garages/carports, and two other buildings or structures in the first two months of 2021.

Requested information about construction starts in Pima was not immediately made available.
