WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Juan Ciscomani, R-Ariz., was selected by the House Steering Committee today to serve on the influential House Appropriations Committee in the 118th Congress.
The appointment will give Arizona’s 6th congressional district a valuable voice on issues regarding government funding.
“The Appropriations Committee will provide a unique opportunity to work on a wide array of issues facing Arizonans,” Ciscomani said. “As a proud representative of a border district which includes two military installations, I understand the importance of prioritizing a secure border and military readiness. Growing up in this district, I understand firsthand the broad challenges, opportunities, and issues of the district: border security, infrastructure, trade and commerce, agriculture, water, healthcare, veteran affairs, energy, and defense. My background as a senior adviser to former Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, and as vice-chairman of the Arizona-Mexico Commission, gives me unique, state-level and international perspectives on the appropriations process. I look forward to working with the Arizona delegation and my colleagues to promote fiscal responsibility, bring transparency to federal spending, and preserve the American Dream for all.”
The Appropriations Committee is responsible for writing legislation to provide funding for government agencies, departments, and organizations. The Appropriations Committee sets funding levels for all federal programs and this appointment provides a unique opportunity to address critical priorities for all Arizonans.
The late-Representative Jim Kolbe served as a member of the House Appropriations Committee for 20 years while in Congress. Ciscomani’s immediate predecessor, Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick, also served as a member of the House Appropriations Committee.
“The hardworking families in my district need to know that their tax dollars are being spent responsibly and efficiently,” Ciscomani said. “That will be my objective as a member of the House Appropriations Committee.”
Ciscomani will bring a fresh face and new energy to the committee, serving as the only first-term legislator on the highly sought-after committee.
Ciscomani was sworn in to the U.S. House of Representatives on Jan. 7, 2023, serving Arizona’s 6th Congressional District. The district covers parts of Pima, Pinal, Cochise, and Graham counties, and all of Greenlee County. It includes the cities of Tucson, Casa Grande, Sierra Vista, Safford, and Green Valley.
It shares a border with Mexico, includes two major military installations — Davis Monthan Air Force Base and Fort Huachuca, includes Morenci Mine, the largest copper producing mine in North America, and the federal highway serves as a major artery for international trade and commerce for Arizona’s number one trading partner Mexico.
Ciscomani previously served as a senior advisor to Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, focusing on international trade, border security, and regional issues. In that role, he also served as vice-chairman of the Arizona-Mexico Commission, a commission that seeks to expand and improve economic prosperity across the region through collaborations between the state of Arizona and the nation of Mexico.
