SAFFORD — Water was a hot topic at a candidate meet-and-greet staged by the Graham County Democratic Committee on Thursday.

“There are five counties in this district, and there are five different problems with water,” said Jackie O’Donnell Anderson, candidate for state House.

Addie Swallow, the other Democratic candidate for state House, said her priorities are water reform, reform the school voucher program and make sure that rural hospitals are adequately funded.

Nick Monsour, who is running for state Treasurer, said the state is consistently ranked near the bottom of the nation in public school performance, and that is directly tied to public school funding. He said more money can go to schools without raising taxes, simply by using an investment strategy employed by other states.

Brian Matlock, candidate for state Mine Inspector, said he will update the administrative code if elected, which will provide more safety protections for workers. He also said the state has to address the volume of abandoned mines posing a health hazard to residents.

Clara Pratte, candidate for Corporation Commission, said the status quo caused the state to no longer prioritize renewable energy options, while at the same allowing utility rates to increase by an average of 40 percent over the past decade.

“We have to restore trust in government,” said JoAnna Mendoza, candidate for Congress. “We have to be willing to end the hatred and divisiveness.

The candidates were also scheduled to meet with constituents Thursday evening in Clifton.

JoAnna Mendoza, candidate for Congress in Dist. 6, standing, talks how the hostilities in Iran have hurt Americans at the gas pumps and put American servicemen and women in harm’s way.
