SAN CARLOS — The San Carlos Apache Tribe is now dealing with two growing wildfires on the reservation.
The Bronco fire, in Hilltop about 25 miles northeast of San Carlos, is at 6,271 acres and 0-percent containment. The fire was started by lightning on Aug. 3.
Hot and dry conditions are leading to very active fire behavior, and firefighters are working to keep the fire from crossing the river.
The Goodwin fire, southeast of Mount Turnbull near White Springs, grew to 400 acres over the last 24 hours. It’s at 0-percent containment.
The fire started Aug. 6, also from lightning.
Crews are having difficulty fighting the fire, due to its location in steep, hilly terrain.
Due to smoke from the fires, the Air Quality Index has been moved to orange and red in Bylas and Peridot. The elderly and those with respiratory issues should remain inside as much as possible.
