Bottom fire starts, Bear fire slowing

CLIFTON — The Bear fire, 25 miles north of Clifton, is at 23,868 acres and the perimeter is 20-percent contained.

Firefighters’ focus is on protecting U.S. Highway 191, residential structures and cabins in remote areas.

Highway 191, between Morenci and Blue Vista, remains closed due to the fire.

The Pinnacle fire, in the Santa Teresa Wildnerness, is now at 70-percent containment, while the Switchback, Twilight 1 and Twilight 2 fires burning snags on Mount Graham are fully controlled. The Veach fire, in the Penalenos, is contained at .18 acre.

The Bottom fire, about 7 miles west of Bylas, has burned 3,000 acres of brush and grass in the Gila River bottom. It is at 0-percent containment.

The Stanley fire, on the San Carlos Apache Reservation, started June 27 and is at 7,897 acres and 10-percent containment.
