Body of Roper Lake drowning victim recovered

GRAHAM COUNTY — The body of a drowning victim at Roper Lake was recovered Monday.

Graham County Sheriff’s Office and Graham County Search and Rescue were called out to the state park at about 3 p.m. Sunday when a swimmer failed to resurface. Graham County does not have a certified dive team, so Cochise County Search and Rescue was called in to assist.

Underwater searches with a remote operated vehicle proved unsuccessful and the search was called put on hold after the sun set. It was resumed at first light Monday and, at 7:15 a.m., a body was recovered.

Identity of the victim has not yet been released.

In a social media post, Graham County Search and Rescue thanked its Cochise County counterparts for the help.

“(We) are very glad to have them assisting us. Our teams work together often and work well together. Thank you Cochise SAR. Our condolences to the family and friends in this unfortunate incident.”
