August fourth most new cases during pandemic

SAFFORD — Following reports of 148 new COVID-19 cases as of Aug. 24 and 68 new cases as of Aug. 26, August now has the fourth greatest number of coronavirus cases in Graham County since the start of the pandemic 19 months ago.

Through Aug. 26, August has seen 426 new cases. That ranks fourth behind 1,889 cases in January, 1,013 in December 2020 and 969 in November 2020.

August’s total is just 143 fewer cases than all the new cases in Graham County in February through July combined.

The total number of cases Graham County has experienced is now up to 6,101. The young adult age group of 20 to 44 year olds continue to account for most of Graham County’s total number cases, with 2,951. Second most is the under 20 age group, with 984 cases, and third are 45 to 54 year olds with 897.

The older age groups have done slightly better at protecting themselves from infection. There have been 645 cases involving those 55 to 64 years old, and 619 cases in those 65 and older.

Graham County continues to offer free vaccinations for anyone over the age of 12, including the FDA-approved Pfizer vaccine.

The Health Department also announced teen nights at the vaccination clinic on Main Street at Safford. Teens 12 to 18 who receive the Pfizer vaccine will receive a $5 Dairy Queen gift card upon receiving the first dose, and a free pizza on receiving the second dose. Teen vaccination clinics take place Thursdays and Fridays, from 5-7:30 p.m.
