SAFFORD — Make sure those contacts are up to date with the area code.

Starting April 24, the full 10-digit phone number must be dialed for local calls. This applies to the 928, 520 and 480 area codes in Arizona, and the 505 and 575 area codes in New Mexico.

For the first six months, if the area code is not dialed, the call will still connect. However, after Oct. 24, local calls made without the area code will not go through.

The requirement also applies to services that operate through telephone lines, including life safety systems or medical monitoring devices, PBXs, fax machines, Internet dial-up numbers, fire or burglar alarm and security systems or gates, speed dialers, mobile or other wireless phone contact lists, call forwarding settings, voicemail services and others.

Dialing 9-1-1 for emergencies will remain the same, as will charges for local calls.
