SAFFORD — Safford City Councilman Mike Andazola is asking for the public’s help in determining the city’s recreational needs.

“What we’re looking for are ideas for kids to hang out, do stuff and bring the community together,” he said. “So probably fields or something — maybe soccer fields or softball fields or stuff like that.”

Andazola put the question to the residents on both the Voice of the Valley radio show on KATO AM 1230 and his personal Facebook page

He received a number of suggestions, including a youth sports facility with clubhouse and practice fields; an indoor pool and recreation facility, similar to the community center developed by Freeport-McMoRan in Morenci; a park for special needs children; and miniature golf and batting cages.

Andazola said there’s no timeline on when any action could be taken on the suggestions; however, city staff and the council are currently in budget talks, which includes setting the city’s five-year capital improvement plan.
