Safford, AZ – The Safford Police Department has been awarded $24,276 in grant funding from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) for Federal Fiscal Year 2027. The funding will support traffic safety enforcement efforts, including Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) overtime, impaired driving enforcement, and traffic safety equipment designed to help reduce collisions and improve roadway safety throughout the City of Safford.

The grant continues the partnership between the Safford Police Department and the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety in their shared commitment to reducing traffic-related injuries and fatalities through proactive enforcement, education, and prevention.

Through GOHS funding, Safford Police officers will conduct targeted enforcement focused on speeding, seat belt and child restraint compliance, distracted driving, and impaired driving. Officers will also participate in regional DUI Task Force operations and local enforcement details aimed at identifying and deterring drivers who choose to operate a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

The Safford Police Department reminds motorists that everyone plays a role in roadway safety. Drivers are encouraged to obey posted speed limits, buckle up on every trip, eliminate distractions behind the wheel, and always plan for a safe ride home when consuming alcohol or using any substance that may cause impairment.

The Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety provides leadership and funding for programs designed to reduce traffic crashes, fatalities, injuries, and property damage throughout Arizona. For more information, visit www.azgohs.gov.
