SAFFORD — For the third City Council meeting in a row, citizens used the open call to the public to speak against license plate reading cameras in Safford.
However, two things were introduced during the most recent meeting on Monday — more people spoke in favor of the cameras, and the possibility of recalling City Council members.
The two who spoke in favor of the cameras cited effective use by law enforcement and encouraged the council to use fact and not be swayed by people’s feelings.
Those speaking against the cameras talked but being monitored against their will and the growing number of cities, towns and counties terminating the cameras’ contracts.
“I know two of you recently won re-election, and you might be feeling very comfortable. But I can promise you, I will make sure that every person in this city knows which of you ends up raising your hand to vote for a new Flock contract, and we’ll let them decide. There may be another ballot, sooner than you think, with your names on it,” said Dave McCormick, who identified himself as living “outside city limits.”
The City Council is prohibited from responding directly to comments made during the Call to the Public.
