PIMA — The Town of Pima is getting a new welcome sign — from one direction.
The Town Council voted unanimously last Tuesday to adopt a new welcome sign for travelers coming into town from the west.
The sign, designed by Marley Grant, shows an artistic version of the town’s downtown, cotton fields and hills, with the words “Welcome to Pima” in white lettering superimposed over the image.
Town Manager Vernon Batty said cost will be less than $1,000 to get the image printed at 12-feet by 20-feet.
The welcome sign facing westbound travelers will also be changed, but will contain a theme similar to the existing sign, which celebrates back-to-back state championships by the Pima High School girls’ basketball team. Batty said a local family wants to pay for a sign celebrating the boys’ team winning a state championship this year.
“The two-time champion Lady Roughriders — I think was ’21-’22 or ’20-’21 — so that one is getting a little old. I think if they keep winning championships, they can keep using that side,” Batty said.
Batty said once the signs are printed, they will be installed by town crews.
