Almost $1M distributed by local United Way in March

SAFFORD — There were more educational programs funded in the United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties’ first quarter large grant cycle, but more money went to health programs.

Six educational programs received a total of $302,475 in Cycle 1, while four heath programs received $468,018.91.

That’s according to data released Monday by the local United Way. A total of $904,219.03 was disbursed in March.

Funded were:

Education

  • $82,000 — Greenlee County for 4H building renovation
  • $77,775 — Graham County School Superintendent for Supporting & Sustaining Teachers 9
  • $72,700 — Morenci Unified School District for Morenci High School track and field equipment
  • $30,000 — Boys & Girls Club of the Gila Valley for program materials and supplies
  • $25,000 — Community Health Assistance Program for Gila Health Resources emergency medical cert courses
  • $15,000 — Wheel Fun for school bike clubs at Fort Thomas, Morenci and Pima middle schools

Health

  • $185,000 — Fort Thomas Rural Fire Department for an emergency water tanker
  • $120,000 — Greenlee County Sheriff’s Office for new portable radios
  • $83,018.91 — St. Vincent de Paul for receiving yard and pantry floor improvements
  • $80,000 — Duncan Valley Rural Fire District for emergency medical readiness

Economic Stability

  • $79,500 — Duncan High School for entrance safety improvements
  • $33,099 — Gila Watershed Partnership of Arizona for the 2026 SEAYLS program

United Way also announced the regular monthly grants and sponsorships of no more than $5,000 for March. They are:

  • $1,500 — Greenlee County Historical Society for an elementary school program

Health

  • $5,000 — Eastern Arizona College for the Monster Challenge
  • $5,000 — Pima Jr. High School for the softball expansion program
  • $1,666.24 — Desert Cat Rescue for rescue van assistance

Economic Stability

  • $4,959.88 — Morenci Clifton Little League for concession stand and field improvements

Sponsorships

  • $3,000 — Graham County Substance Abuse Coalition for the Easter Egg Hunt for Communication program

The United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties makes grants to nonprofit, educational and governmental organizations thanks to donations from Freeport-McMoRan Foundation and Freeport employees; employees of the City of Safford, Town of Thatcher and Graham County; and individual donors.
