MORENCI, Ariz. — Morenci senior running back Julien Aragon has been named one of the Week 10 medallion recipients for the Ed Doherty Award, Arizona’s highest individual honor in high school football.
Aragon earned the recognition after a monster performance in Morenci’s 34–21 win over Arete Prep, where he rushed 28 times for 269 yards and four touchdowns. His explosive night helped seal a key victory as the Wildcats gear up for the postseason.
Through ten games this season, Aragon has carried the load for Morenci’s offense — literally. He’s totaled 1,255 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on 186 carries, accounting for nearly half of the team’s total rushing production. Averaging more than 125 yards per game, the senior’s power, vision, and consistency have made him the steady heartbeat of the Wildcats’ attack.
Head Coach Frankie Gonzalez praised Aragon’s development and leadership, saying,
“Julien is a great kid. He stayed the course, bought into the program, and has worked really hard. His consistency and effort every day are really starting to show. We’re super proud of him and what he’s continuing to do.”
With Morenci entering the 2A playoffs as the #15 seed and set to host #18 Tuba City on October 31, Aragon’s leadership and production will be key as the Wildcats look to make a postseason run.
Aragon is the first Gila Valley area athlete nominated for the award this season.
The Ed Doherty Award, presented by the Arizona Sports & Entertainment Commission and Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club, recognizes athletes who exemplify ability, integrity, perseverance, and hard work — qualities that define not only excellence on the field but character off it.
