SAFFORD — A significant amount of money was raised in this year’s Give From the Heart hot dog sale by the Safford Utilities Department.
City officials said the sale of $2 hot dogs, $3 nachos and $1 cookies and sodas on Oct. 16 raised $4,662.59. The funds will be used to help reduce utility costs for Safford residents 62 and older, who financially qualify.
The Give from the Heart program currently serves 21 senior households, with a monthly utility offset of about $1,035.
“Because of you, we’ve set another record and kept the spirit of giving alive, one hot dog at a time,” City of Safford officials said in an e-mail.
In addition to the hot dog sale, $8,600 was raised through the inaugural half-beef raffle announced at SalsaFest this year, and residents can contribute when paying the monthly utility bill.
On the billing stub returned with the payment, residents can choose to make a one-time contribution of any amount, round up to the nearest whole dollar, or add $1 to the payment.
Sponsors for the Give From the Heart hot dog sale include Vista Recycling, Kempton Chevrolet, Nutrioso Riders, Fairway Independent Mortgage, Food City, CMI, Pepsi, Walmart, Boulevard Glass and Modern Woodman.
