CLIFTON — The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests announced 16 prescribed burns will take place over the next few months, with two taking place in the Clifton Ranger District.

The burns in the Clifton Ranger District are:

  • Block B prescribed fire — 9,406 acres five miles southwest of the Blue Vista Overlook
  • Hagen prescribed fire — 5,706 acres four miles south of the Blue Vista Overlook, on the west side of U.S. Highway 191

Areas may be closed to the public for several days for public safety, and warning signs will be posted along roads near all prescribed fire areas before and during burns.

Work is expected to be completed by early winter, weather permitting.

“We use prescribed fires to help reduce overgrown vegetation to help protect local communities, infrastructure and natural resources from wildfires,” Forest officials said in a prepared release.

The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests encompasses five ranger districts across four Arizona counties — Greenlee, Apache, Navajo and Coconino — and Catron County in New Mexico.
