FLORENCE — For all the twists and turns Friday night in Florence, it came down to one final mistake. The Gophers were knocking on the door at the Thatcher 16-yard line with less than 30 seconds to play, trailing by just three. But the ball slipped loose, and when the Eagles pounced on the fumble, the game was theirs. Two kneel-downs later, Thatcher walked off with a hard-fought 21-18 victory.
The Eagles built their lead the old-fashioned way — on the ground and with defense. Jackson Bryce powered across for a 2-yard touchdown in the first quarter to put Thatcher up 7-0. Florence answered early in the second when quarterback Brody Ramirez dropped a 48-yard strike into the hands of Wyatt Stenson, but the missed kick kept Thatcher in front.
Momentum swung sharply a few minutes later when Josiah Matagaono jumped a pass and raced 25 yards the other way for a pick-six. With the two-point conversion tacked on, the Eagles had breathing room at 15-6. Florence, though, refused to fade. Ramirez capped a late drive with an 11-yard toss to Kaidin Valle as the half expired, trimming the deficit to 15-12.
Thatcher struck again midway through the third when Smith Mangum slashed in from 17 yards out, but once again Ramirez had the answer — this time a 70-yard bomb to Darrius Samuels that electrified the home crowd and cut the lead to 21-18 heading into the fourth.
That’s where the defenses stiffened. The Gophers had their chance late, driving deep into Eagle territory, but Thatcher’s opportunistic defense delivered one final punch.
Statistically, Thatcher leaned on balance. Senior Chad Johnson went 5-for-11 for 107 yards despite a pair of interceptions. Bryce carried 15 times for 94 yards and a score, while Mangum added 28 yards on the ground and the third-quarter touchdown, plus a 40-yard catch that set up the opening score. The Eagles finished with 162 rushing yards and 107 through the air.
For Florence, Ramirez carried the offense, throwing for 231 yards and three touchdowns on 12-of-22 passing. Stenson caught five passes for 88 yards and a score, while Samuels added three grabs for 88 yards and another touchdown. But the Gophers’ ground game was bottled up for just 79 yards, and in the end, it was their last fumble that defined the night.
With the win, Thatcher improves to 3-1 heading into a well-timed bye week. The Eagles were missing a couple of starters Friday, and the break should give them a chance to heal up before diving into the heart of their schedule. After the bye, Thatcher will host the red-hot Pusch Ridge Christian Lions in what should be another early-season test.
