GRAHAM COUNTY — With a flood watch in effect for the upper Gila River Valley over the next two days, the communities in Graham County have announced steps to help home and business owners protect their investments and their families.
City of Safford is making sand and sand bags available. Bags are available at the Public Works Office and sand at the Public Works Yard, both on Discovery Park Boulevard. There is a limit of five bags and everything must be picked up by 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4.
Town of Thatcher is making sand bags available to residents at the town’s Public Works Office, and sand available at the Public Works Yard, both on Reay Lane. There is a limit of five bags and any remaining bags will be left near the sand after the close of the work day Thursday.
Town of Pima is making sand bags and sand available at the Town Yard on South 200 East. The town has not announced any limits.
Graham County will have sand bags and sand available at the Graham County Fairgrounds. There is a limit of five bags; however, there is no time limit on when bags and sand may be picked up.
The National Weather Service is predicting between noon Friday to 5 p.m. Saturday 1-2 inches of rain could fall on the Gila Valley, with up to 4 inches in higher elevations, which could cause flash flooding.
