BYLAS — The Goodwin fire on the San Carlos Apache Reservation, about 12 miles southwest of Bylas and 12 miles northeast of Klondyke, is now at 1,010 acres with 0-percent containment.

The fire started Aug. 6 from lightning.

The incident Management Team said the fire is burning short grass, brush and juniper and showed minimal growth Sunday. However, gusty and erratic outflow winds continue to threaten fire expansion.

While smoke from the fire is visible, the air quality index in the Bylas area is currently in the good range.

The Bronco fire, also on the San Carlos Apache Reservation about 30 miles northeast of San Carlos, is at 18,109 acres and at 0-percent containment.

The Bronco fire started Aug. 3 from lightning.

Southwest Area Incident Management Team 4 assumed command Sunday and is concurrently battling the Bronco and nearby Indian Creek fire (2,511 acres) on the Fort Apache Reservation, about 10 miles southwest of Whiteriver.

A total of 469 personnel have been assigned to fight the two fires with the goal of full suppression.
