San Carlos Tribe gets grant to protect Gila River watershed

SAN CARLOS — The San Carlos Apache Tribe will receive $2.7 million to improve the health of the Gila River watershed on the reservation.

The funds are being granted by the U.S. Interior Department through the America the Beautiful Challenge program.

The tribe will use the money to install erosion-control structures, construct trails, implement fuel-reduction treatments and remove invasive species.

In addition, as part of the project, the tribe will establish a San Carlos Apache Conservation Corps program to help up to 34 local, Native young adults learn natural resource management skills and complete restoration work.

The grant is part of $122 million being distributed for conservation projects administered by 19 tribal nations, 42 states and two U.S. territories.

The America the Beautiful Challenge has advanced engagement with Tribes, funding a record amount of tribally led efforts and elevating the use of Indigenous Knowledge to benefit endangered species and treasured landscapes. These innovative investments will leave a lasting legacy on our nation’s lands and waters,” Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said in a prepared release.
