Pima, Ariz — As the 2024 football season approaches, the Pima High School Roughriders, led by Coach Josh Wilkins, are ready to build on their extraordinary performance from last year. Now in his fifth year at Pima and with 12 years of coaching experience, Wilkins has established a robust program that is both feared and respected across the 2A Black conference.
Last season, Pima High School boasted a remarkable 13-1 record. They dominated the Black Region, without conceding a single point in region play and finished as state runners-up. This success followed a remarkable 25-game winning streak that spanned two seasons. Despite the streak ending with their loss in last year’s title game, the Roughriders are determined to reclaim their former glory and are aiming to secure both the region championship and the state title.
The team returns a solid core of key players this year. Jeremiah Martinez, a powerful and swift running back standing 6’2″ and weighing 230 pounds, is expected to be a pivotal force. Known for his ability to run through defenders and his speed to break away on the edge, Martinez is a significant asset. Supporting him is an offensive line that Coach Wilkins praises as the best he has ever coached. Quarterback Cedric Grimes, returning with greater confidence, improved decision-making, and a stronger arm, will be complemented by a talented group of receivers, including Preston Russell and Jaxon McBiles.
On the defensive side, the team is anchored by Brock Haws, who ranked second in sacks across Arizona last season with 20. Haws has used the offseason to get stronger and faster, ready to lead a defense that has rededicated itself, particularly in the defensive backfield, after last year’s injury struggles. The defensive line is further bolstered by Dante McCray and Charles Richardson, who bring both experience and strength.
While the Roughriders will miss several key players lost to graduation, such as Jaxon John, now playing football at Missouri S&E, and other talented athletes like Tuddy Smart, Pepper Hughes, Sam Ray, Ryker Shupe, and Hayden Blair, emerging talents like Keegan Corona, Emmitt McBiles, Joe Palmer, Toby Bryce, and Hollen Hoopes are set to step up and make their mark this season.
Depth remains a concern for the team. Coach Wilkins acknowledges the need for underclassmen to rise to the occasion and fill critical roles to ensure the team’s overall success. Special teams also continue to be a crucial component of the Roughriders’ strategy, with players consistently stepping up to meet the demands of each game.
The coaching staff, including Lee Haws, Jake McBiles, and Steve Lunt, along with JV coaches Nick Grimes, Dallas Davis, Cade Bryce, and Scott McBiles, are a big factor in the team’s success. Their collective experience and dedication provide a strong foundation for the team’s aspirations.
This season’s schedule includes highly anticipated matchups. Local rivalries with Safford and Morenci always generate excitement, and a rematch with Scottsdale Christian midseason is sure to be a playoff preview.
Coach Wilkins’s philosophy emphasizes “we over me,” promoting teamwork and collective effort. Last season’s memorable moments, including overcoming numerous injuries to finish as state runner-up, have instilled a resilient and determined mindset within the team. With seniors Brock Haws and Jeremiah Martinez leading by example, the Roughriders are poised to make a significant impact this season.
As the Roughriders prepare for the new season, expectations are high. With a blend of seasoned talent, promising newcomers, and a strong coaching staff, Pima High School is set for another remarkable season, aiming for regional and state success.
