PERIDOT — Despite being at 90-percent containment, the Toyo fire on the western edge of Graham County flared up enough to force a 2.5-hour closure of U.S. Highway 70 Wednesday.

San Carlos Apache Police announced the closure of the highway between Route 6 and Peridot 170, just before 9 p.m. Wednesday. The roadway was re-opened at about 11:30 p.m.

Control of the fire has been handed back to the San Carlos Apache Forest Resources Program, which is conducting mop-up efforts.

The fire, which peaked at 1,778 acres, started May 10 and cause remains under investigation.
