SAFFORD — While Health experts continue to monitor the upward trend in coronavirus cases, especially among those who have not been vaccinated, another illness is showing increased numbers — Valley fever.

Arizona Department of Health Services reports through the first six months of 2021, there have been 6,419 cases of Valley fever statewide, with 12 of those cases in Graham County and two in Greenlee.

Valley Fever is developed by breathing in microscopic fungal spores found in the desert Southwest ground. Most who get sick with Valley fever will get better on their own, but some severe cases will need antifungal medication and anywhere from 5- to 10-percent of those who contract Valley fever will develop long-term lung issues.

Symptoms of Valley fever include:

● Fatigue (tiredness)

● Cough

● Fever

● Shortness of breath

● Headache

● Night sweats

● Muscle aches or joint pain

● Rash on upper body or legs

Symptoms can last from a few weeks up to a few months. If symptoms last for more than a week, contact a health-care provider.
