THATCHER — Arizona Department of Transportation has informed the Town of Thatcher that work on U.S. Highway 70 between Thatcher and Pima will begin Monday, Oct. 5.
The pavement rehabilitation project from Reay Lane in Thatcher to Cottonwood Wash in Pima was moved up in the ADOT Capital Projects Plan to this year by the state Transportation Board in May.
Contractor hours are planned from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Motorists traveling through the area can expect traffic restrictions and work hours to vary throughout the project.
ADOT will provide advance notice of the following restrictions and closures:
- Reduced speed limit in the work zone
- Temporary curb access ramp, sidewalk and driveway closures
- Intermittent daytime lane restrictions tentatively scheduled from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays
- Nighttime lane restrictions for paving work tentatively scheduled from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday evenings through Friday mornings
The 5.4 mile project includes milling the current roadway by 2.5 inches and laying down new asphalt, replacement of guardrails and terminals, fencing, reconstruction of driveways and turnouts, ADA improvements, and new pavement markings and signage.
Cost of the project is $20.74 million.
It’s the second phase of a two-phase project to improve U.S. Highway 70 between Safford and Pima. The first phase — between 8th Street in Safford and Reay Lane in Thatcher — was completed in May.
