SAN CARLOS — With temperatures expected to drop into the mid-20s Wednesday and Thursday nights, the San Carlos Apache Tribe is making warming shelters available to unhoused tribal residents and those without heat.

The warming shelters are located at:

  • Michael Noline’s Activity Center
  • Seven Mile Wash Activity Center
  • Bylas Exhibit Hall

The warming shelters will be open from 6 p.m. to 10 a.m. through Jan. 10.

While the Gila Valley Samaritan Home does serve as a cooling shelter during the summer, it is not set up to serve as a warming shelter. However, director Sue Ciacimino told Gila Valley Central the organization is securing motel rooms for some of the area’s unhoused.

“We’re trying to keep as many people safe as we can,” Ciacimino said.

She added that the Local Coalition to End Homelessness has discussed seeking grants to develop a warming station for the area.
