SAFFORD — Aircraft fans got a sneak peek Thursday at one of the participants in this weekend’s Safford Airshow.

Torrey Ward brought his SubSonex JSX-2 Microjet to Safford City Hall to give the public a close-up look at his plane before he takes it in the air this Saturday at Safford Regional Airport-1Lt Duane Spalsbury Field.

“We’re going to fly it high, low, slow and fast,” Ward said. “You’re going to see a lot of high energy, high speed, everything up to about 300 miles per hour with this tiny little jet that I, literally, just get in and wear it like a piece of clothing because it’s so small.”

The length of the jet is 16 feet, with an 18-foot wingspan, and weighs just 480 pounds.

Ward’s Microjet is just one of the aircraft that will be performing at this weekend’s second annual Safford Airshow. Other aerobatic performers include:

  • Dan Kirtland’s T-28 Trojan
  • Alfred Maldonado’s two Fouga Magister CM-170s

  • A PT-17 Stearman bi-plane
  • UH-1 Huey and AH-1 Apache helicopters
  • A P-51D Mustang
