PIMA — Development of a new recreation complex in Pima took one step closer to reality Tuesday, thanks to the United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties.

The local United Way presented the town with a grant for $200,000 for part of the match for another grant.

“We got a $1.5 million grant from the Arizona State Parks fund. It’s currently under review at the national level, but from what I understand, that’s just a formality and they said the funds should be available to us in July,” said Pima Town Manager Vernon Batty. “That did come with a $500,000 match for us, which, $500,000 is a lot of money for Pima.”

Plans are to use the money for two projects — resurface the town pool and increased amenities around the town’s ballfields, including covered playground, pickleball courts, basketball courts, sand volleyball, new concessions, lighting, sidewalks, and drainage.

“Pima is doing great things and we’re so excited about that,” said Denise Benton, United Way executive director. “We’re so very happy to be here again, to get to be a part of that and partner with Pima.”

United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties receives its funding for local grants from donations by Freeport-McMoRan, Freeport employees, City of Safford employees and individual donors.
