Unemployment report shows Greenlee up, Graham down

PHOENIX — The jobless rate in Greenlee County rose slightly in September, but still remains below 3 percent.

That’s according to data released Thursday by the Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity.

Greenlee County’s unemployment rate increased one-tenth of a point in September to 2.9 percent, the 34th month in a row Greenlee County has the lowest unemployment in the state.

Meanwhile Graham County’s jobless rate fell in September, dropping one-tenth of a percentage point, to 3.5 percent. Graham has the fourth-lowest unemployment rate in the state, behind Greenlee’s 2.9 percent, and Yavapai and Maricopa counties both at 3.4 percent.

The unemployment rate in nearby Cochise County remained flat in September, at 4.3 percent.

Statewide, the seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate increased by one-tenth of a point in September, 3.5 percent, while the national unemployment rate dropped one-tenth of a point to 4.1 percent.

“Arizona’s unemployment rate remains historical pre-pandemic rates for the state, and well below the current average U.S. rate,” said Doug Walls, chief economist for the Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity.

Job gains were reported in six economic sectors: Government (up 20,400 jobs); private educational services (up 4,000 jobs); health care and social assistance (up 3,300 jobs); trade, transportation and utilities (up 2,100 jobs); professional and business services (up 1,700 jobs); and information (up 200 jobs).

Reporting job losses were: Construction (down 1,700 jobs), financial activities (down 800 jobs), and leisure and hospitality (down 600 jobs).

Manufacturing, and natural resources and mining reported no job growth or loss in September.
