Trucker Driver issued speed citation after 7 mile pursuit

On Wednesday, January 8, 2025, unknown caller reported a freightliner semi speeding through Pima at approximately 70 MPH. A deputy in the area further west got behind the truck on Highway 70 and clocked it going 75 MPH in a 65 MPH zone. The deputy activated his emergency lights to pull the truck over but it did not stop. The deputy turned on his siren and used his air horn to get the truck driver’s attention but the truck kept on driving at an accelerated speed.

The deputy radioed for additional units to help with the pursuit. The deputy straddled the yellow center line where the driver could have easily seen him but the truck driver still did not stop. The semi finally pulled over and came to a stop at the Fort Thomas High School parking lot after being pursued by law enforcement for 7 miles.

The deputy drew his gun as he stepped out of his vehicle and used his PA system to order the truck driver out of his truck. He was placed in handcuffs while his vehicle was searched. Nobody else was found in the semi.

The truck driver has an Illinois driver’s license but apparently did not understand English very well. When the deputy read the man his Miranda rights, he indicated that he didn’t quite understand. The deputy explained them in simple terms and told the man he did not have to answer questions if he didn’t want to. The man agreed to talk with the deputy and when asked why he didn’t pull over, the man stated that he didn’t know the deputy was behind him.

Due to the high winds that day, the deputy concluded that the truck driver may not have been able to hear the siren or air horn. He was cited for excessive speed for approximately 9 miles. The deputy told him he should check his mirrors more often. The man was released with speeding ticket.
