THATCHER — The Town of Thatcher and the City of Safford may be working together soon on extra traffic control at the intersection of 8th Street and 20th Avenue.
The first step is conducting a traffic count.
“This is on ADOT’s radar screen as one of the top five most dangerous non-highway intersections based on crash data, said Thatcher Town Engineer Tom Palmer.
He added that the town has enlisted the help of the consultant currently working on the traffic light placement at U.S. Highway 70 and 1st Avenue for a proposed new Circle K.
Should the intersection at 20th Avenue and 8th Street merit the addition of turn arrows, Palmer said current policy is to use cameras and AI to determine signal timing. Because of the greater cost, acquisition and installation would likely need to be a joint venture with Safford.
Timeline for a completed traffic count has not yet been established.
