Thatcher, Safford, Graham County purchasing six properties to protect roads

SAFFORD — Six properties foreclosed due to nonpayment of taxes are being sold to area governments to protect local travel.

The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to sell six parcels to itself, the Town of Thatcher and the City of Safford because the parcels include rights-of-way.

The parcels are being sold for the minimum bid amounts.

“Most of the funds the county has put out, the county is basically paying itself back,” said Lori Boren, chief deputy for the Treasurer’s Office. “However, the back taxes that were due at the time that we foreclosed on it, that amount is set aside and distributed to the taxing authorities that were owed the money. So some of the funds do go back to the city, the school, the college — everybody who was owed money will get their piece back.”

Graham County will pay $11,051.65 for three parcels — two on Webster Road and one on Cactus Road —Thatcher will pay $1,436.94 for two parcels — one on Griffin Place and the other on North high School Avenue  and Safford will pay $1,029.06 for an alley off Relation Street.

State law allows the county to sell property seized for nonpayment of taxes to “the county or a city, town or special taxing district in the county for a public purpose related to transportation or flood control.”
