Today marks the opening of the 2026 tax filing season!
IPX1031’s 7th annual Tax Procrastination report finds not everyone will be submitting their returns soon, as 29% of Americans procrastinate filing their taxes and more than 1 in 5 (22%) don’t feel prepared to file their taxes in 2026.
In fact, 60% say filing taxes is stressful and 19% don’t know when the 2026 tax filing deadline is. 1 in 5 will use AI to help file their taxes this year
The top reasons for procrastinating include that filing feels too complicated or stressful, it takes too much time, and the fear of owing money. Additionally, Americans spend an average of $128 per year on tax preparation.
