Study finds 9 in 10 Americans Work a Full-Time Job and a Side Hustle

The current economic climate and high cost of living have made it difficult for many Americans to meet their financial obligations, forcing them to take on additional work to stay afloat. But, recent return-to-office wars are putting a wrench in some people’s side-hustle abilities. 

A new report found 9 in 10 Americans currently work a second job. Over half (55%) of those with side-gigs admit to working them during their full-time job’s working hours! 

And, 55% said they would quit their full-time job if they made enough money solely working their side hustle. The report also found more than half of Americans need the additional income to support themselves financially, making an average of $777/month extra from the second job. 

Additional highlights include:

  • 1 in 10 have been caught by a coworker or manager working their side hustle
  • Americans work their side hustles 15 hours/week on average
  • Why Americans are working second jobs: to help cover bills, have extra cash, and pay off debt 
  • 1 in 5 plan to make their side hustle into their full-time job within the next 5 years

Top side hustles include: driving for a rideshare app, selling items/handmade products online, freelance writing, and selling used clothing.
