SAFFORD — An 80-year-old icon is coming to the Safford Library.

Smokey Bear will be at the Safford City-Graham County Library for a special family storytime Thursday, April 18, from 3-5 p.m.

“He will be there with some of his friends to teach kid about forest fires, about nature and the cool things you can do outside this summer,” said Library Supervisor Leslie Talley, who added there will also be plenty of hands-on activities during the visit.

For Smokey’s 80th birthday on Aug. 9 of this year, the U.S. Forest Service has introduced a Smokey Bear reading program for libraries to incorporate into summer reading programs, with library visits across the state kicking-off that program.

The event will take place at the main branch of the library, on 7th Avenue, and is free to attend.
