Shoplifting suspect claims to have firearm in brief standoff with police

Safford police responded to Walmart regarding a woman who had attempted to shoplift from the store. The woman apparently made it out of the store and was located by a Thatcher officer at the front entrance to Walgreens. The woman told the officer that she had a gun and would not remove her hand from her purse. The suspect would not listen to commands and was refusing to leave the front entrance of Walgreens, endangering the employees and customers.

Additional officers surrounded Walgreens to secure the area. The suspect was ultimately tased and fell to the ground. She was taken into custody without further incident.
