SAFFORD — A new opportunity to keep seniors active and engaged was celebrated Wednesday.

Safford Lions Club presented a check for $5,000 to help pay for a new 14-passenger van to be used by Southeastern Arizona Community Unique Services (SEACUS) to transport those 55 and older.

“So they can come to our Senior Center and take advantage of our activities and our nutritious meals,” said Stephanie Nabor, SEACUS executive director. “I would say just independence.”

SEACUS previously received $25,000 from United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties for the van, which was wrapped by CMI Quick Copy.

To ensure a seat on the van, seniors must call 928-428-3229 24 hours in advance.

Wednesday also saw the presentation of another check to SEACUS from United Way.

“A $135,000 grant was to SEACUS cycle 3, supplementing SEACUS’ senior services, and that’s their annual grant,” said Denise Benton, United Way executive director.
