San Carlos Apache Tribe implementing Stage 2 fire restrictions

SAN CARLOS — The San Carlos Apache Tribal Council announced Stage 2 fire restrictions will go into effect next week.

Starting March 17, campfires will be prohibited, as will smoking outdoors. In addition, discharging a firearm except for a licensed hunt is not allowed, and chainsaws may only be used between 7 a.m. and noon.

The tribe is also taking steps to reduce the amount of grass and brush that can become wildfire fuel on the reservation, by conducted a prescribed burn in Bylas, Peridot, Seven Mile, Gilson Wash, Hollywood and Cutter districts.

Weather permitting, the 500-acre burn is scheduled to start April 14 in Seven Mile, and finish by April 28.
