SAN CARLOS — Multiple structures are reported as having been destroyed by the Watch fire in San Carlos, resulting in a number of evacuation orders.

The San Carlos Apache Forest Resource Program’s most recent report has the fire at more than 1,100 acres, and is located in the areas of White Mountain and San Carlos avenues.

Residents in the following areas have been ordered to evacuate for safety:

  • TC Alley
  • Chinatown
  • Peridot Heights
  • Old/New Moonbase
  • White Mountain Avenue north of Antonio

Evacuation shelters have been established at San Carlos High School and the bingo hall at Apache Gold Casino.

Residents in the Peridot Siding and White Mountain Avenue area behind the college have been placed in the “Ready” mode, meaning they should be prepared to evacuate if the order is issued.

San Carlos Apache Police have closed a number of roadways due to the fire, including White Mountain Avenue, Peridot Siding to Again Bridge, and Indian Route 170 from the junction of Aravaipa/San Carlos Avenue to north of Chinatown. Back roads in those areas are closed as well.

The Watch fire started Thursday as a brush fire in the 7 Mile District, and strong winds drove the fire through downtown San Carlos. Initial cause of the brush fire is not yet known at this time.

A complex incident management team has been called in to help battle the blaze, which is currently at 0-percent containment.
