SalsaFest returns Friday and Saturday

SAFFORD —Friday and Saturday, Downtown Safford will come alive with an exciting blend of food, music, and activities for all ages at the 2024 NatureSweet SalsaFest — Year of the Chimichanga.

The two-day festival will kick off on Friday at 5 p.m. with the opening ceremonies on the Kempton Chevrolet Stage on the lawn in front of Safford City Hall, followed by live music from Mariachi Luz de Luna. Local restaurants will provide salsa tastings in the Taste of the Trail competition, and refreshing beverages will be available at the Estrella Jalisco Beer Garden.

In the Mini Chimi Party Zone on the Kempton Chevrolet lot, there will be family-friendly entertainment such as kids’ karaoke on the Matheson Music Foundation Stage and a movie night.

On Saturday, the action for amateur salsa makers starts early with preparation for the CMI SalsaFest Challenge at 7 a.m., followed by the popular Chihuahua races, performances from Gila Cheer, live music from 2024 Gila Idol winner Kamae Nelson and other local artists. At noon U.S. Rep. Juan Ciscomani, R-Ariz., will join Safford City Council Member Dusti Brantner in welcoming everyone to SalsaFest, followed by more live music. There will be many food and drink options available from food trucks and booths as well as a street mercado for unique gifts and toys.

Over in the Mini Chimi Party Zone, there will be a full day of kids’ activities, including an instrument petting zoo, water games, and bounce houses.

Back on the main stage, the Awards Ceremony will take place at 8 p.m., followed by the XS Band Street Dance.

Admission is free, bags of chips to take part in the Taste of the Trail and CMI SalsaFest Challenge salsa tastings are $15, and Doc Holiday and Estrella Jalisco Beer Garden drink tickets are $5 each.
